In the world you will have trouble,
but take courage, I have conquered the world.”
This statement is perhaps the crux of my decision and desire to be a Christian. Jesus is the ultimate protector, trailblazer, and friend. I get to lay my burdens down before him; I follow the path he has already cleared. His words almost evoke the image of a big brother who would fight off life's bullies, one by one.
Of course I know that Jesus doesn't take life's burdens away, nor does he prevent us from facing challenges because he faced the ultimate one. But it's both comforting and empowering to follow a leader who could offer this counsel and claim this kind of victory. With him, we can conquer the world too.
These words also remind me that though the world we live in presents challenges and heartaches, Jesus offers a life beyond this one. This isn't usually the kind of reassurance that gets me through the day, but maybe I should keep this idea in mind more often. My trials are temporary, but getting through them with integrity and kindness is worth the rewards that will come.
